Over the last few years, research on Weimar Germany has finally moved away from its obsession with Berlin and has focused more on Germany’s federal nature and its regional centres. The study Der Badische Landtag 1918-1933 is a timely and important contribution to this new current. It shows that, while the Weimar Republic was dogged frequently by civil unrest and weak parliaments on a national level, democracy and parliamentarianism enjoyed high popularity in the south-western state of Baden.
